Dr Maxine Howard is a senior clinical psychologist specialising in the assessment and treatment of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and other eating-related challenges. She has been working in NHS national and specialist anxiety services since 2018, including the national and specialist ARFID Service for children and young people.

Maxine is experienced in the comprehensive assessment and treatment of ARFID, tailoring her therapeutic approach to the needs of the individual. She is skilled in delivering Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), incorporating exposure work, to address food related anxiety and avoidance. She will work to help you, or your child, introduce new foods whilst also addressing the underlying psychological factors that contribute to ARFID. Maxine has experience of working with young people, parents/carers, and adults.

Prior to clinical training, Maxine completed a PhD in the field of eating disorders and keeps up-to-date on the latest research evidence for the treatment of ARFID. Maxine has a special interest and expertise in the treatment of ARFID in the context of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or emetophobia. Having also worked in a national and specialist service for OCD, BDD and Related Disorders, she is skilled in treating co-morbid OCD or emetophobia that might be maintaining difficulties with eating.

Maxine is a warm and friendly clinician who enjoys working with neurodivergence. Her focus in therapy is to collaboratively work with an individual to empower them with the skills they need to achieve their goals.
